About the Tour
Join us for a tour of the world's first platinum LEED certified hospital! Tour shuttle buses will depart from the Hilton Austin on Wednesday, May 13 at 1:00 p.m. and will return no later than 5:00 p.m. To register for the tour, please check the appropriate box on the conference registration form. Limited to 150 registrants.
Conference attendees will experience the total healing environment of the facility, whose 145-foot tower serves as a way-finding symbol both day and night when the tower is brightly lit. Natural light is visible in 80% of the 455,000 square foot building, which contains:
-
neonatal and pediatric intensive care units;
-
a comprehensive trauma service;
-
a 13-suite surgery center with an OR 1 system in four of the operating rooms;
-
a custom designed rehabilitation therapy pool that challenges both neuromuscular patients and athletes with sports injuries;
-
bone marrow transplant-capable beds; and,
-
a craniofacial, plastic and reconstructive surgery center.
A stroll through Dell Children's has been described by design specialists as breathtaking. It features:
-
a three-acre, multi-level healing garden complete with a labyrinth, human sundial, reflecting pond and bridge;
-
more than 900 works of art, chosen for the collection's clinical healing power rather than for simple aesthetics; and,
-
seven self-contained eco-systems, each corresponding to a distinct area of the 46-county Central Texas region that Dell Children's serves.
The Platinum LEED status means Dell Children's excels in five distinct areas of "green" design and construction. Join us and learn more about:
- Sustainable site planning
- Water conservation
- Energy efficiency and conservation
- Conservation of building materials
- Indoor environmental quality

About Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas
Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas is striving to be a center of excellence for central Texas consisting of a strong alliance of expert personnel, facilities and other specialty resources dedicated to the care of children and adolescents within a 46 county referral region. The hospital has already received widespread acclaim for combining cutting-edge medical technology, a large collection of healing art, and "green" building design incorporating the latest in construction, conservation, and livability features. Its design has led to Dell Children's being the first - and currently, the only - hospital awarded the U.S. Green Building Council's prestigious Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) award.
The $200 million facility is a combination of high tech and high touch. Many design features such as mini-living room areas in patient rooms to allow parents to stay overnight make Dell Children's a truly family-centered facility. It is the cornerstone of a 32-acre urban redevelopment project at Austin's former Mueller Airport site. Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas opened on June 30, 2007 and was awarded platinum LEED status in January 2009.
