Children’s downtown campus is home to Children’s Hospital, which maintains facilities to care for the most critically ill and injured children. The main hospital features 323 inpatient beds including critical care units, transplant services, pediatric sub-specialists and surgical facilities (which include Outpatient Surgery and a free-standing Surgery Center).
Children from across the state are transported to the hospital’s Level I Trauma Center. Children’s was the first children’s hospital in Ohio to receive a Level I verification by the American College of Surgeons, which is the highest award a Trauma Center can receive.
Also located on the campus of Children’s is the Outpatient Care Center and clinics, outpatient surgery services, Children’s Institute for Pediatric Education, Children’s Research Institute and numerous other services. Children’s medical staff of more than 800 physicians, many who have community-based practices, provide tremendous access to pediatric healthcare.
Children’s also brings its expertise to other area hospitals; managing 48 newborn intensive care beds at several adult care facilities.
Children’s brings its unique brand of caring into the community through a network of more than 17 Children’s Close To Homesm Health Care and Physician Care Centers. The Health Care Centers offer therapeutic and diagnostic services including laboratory, radiology, occupational/physical therapy, speech and language pathology, electrocardiogram testing and behavioral health and counseling services for children, adolescents and their families. The Physician Care Centers offer pediatric primary care services in Columbus’ under-served urban neighborhoods. Behavioral Health services are available at both Physician and Health Care Centers.
Pediatric urgent care is available at three sites:Dublin, Westerville and Reynoldsburg. Hours are limited to evenings and weekends, providing care for minor cuts, injuries or illnesses when a patient’s primary care doctor is not available. As with the other Close To Home Health Care Centers, all three sites offer diagnostic and therapeutic care, and counseling services.
Breakthroughs
A multitude of comprehensive programs, integrating medical and surgical sub-specialties, is the core for tertiary care provided at Children's Hospital. Services are integrated between the inpatient and outpatient areas to enable a full continuum of patient care and educational opportunities.
Some of the other special services include emergency transport; liver, kidney, and bone marrow transplantation; high frequency ventilation and ECMO; nationally recognized child abuse program; and the multidisciplinary Children's Hospice.
Board-certified pediatric radiologists are available in-house, 24 hours/day, seven days/week. Facilities and services include plain radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, angiography, and interventional radiology. The Nuclear Medicine section offers comprehensive Nuclear Medicine imaging and Iodine-131 treatment services. Radiation oncology services are available through the staff and facilities of The Ohio State University Medical Center.
Children's Hospital is certified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I Trauma Center, the first pediatric provider in Ohio. Children's has one of the busiest pediatric emergency departments in the country, with more than 130,000 emergency facility visits annually. Also, a freestanding Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Center is located on campus.
Children’s Hospital is one of only five children’s hospitals with an unenhanced Aa or better bond rating by Moody’s Investor Services.
The Columbus Children's Research Institute, one of the ten largest freestanding pediatric centers in the country, is dedicated to translational research. Located in two buildings on Children’s campus, the Institute houses hundreds of faculty members and their labs, as well as experts in statistics and research design. The Research Institute continues to grow and expand, attracting nationally and internationally recognized researchers who continue to make history in the treatment and prevention of chronic and acute diseases that infect children and adults.
Center for Child and Family Advocacy
The Center for Child and Family Advocacy brings abuse investigation, assessment and treatment under one roof, and provides services to all victims of domestic violence. This freestanding center presents a model that is unique nationwide.
