Blank Children’s Hospital is designed to meet the special healthcare needs of children and their families. Unlike the usual hospital where children are asked to fit into an adult world, Blank is designed especially for children. From smaller sizes of medical equipment, specially trained doctors and nurses to unique menu selections, social and educational activities, Blank is designed to make children and their families more comfortable.

In order to continue the exceptional care and offer an environment specifically designed for patients and their families, Blank Children’s Hospital is currently undergoing a complete redesign and expansion project. The “new” Blank Children’s Hospital, opening in August 2001, will allow Blank to maximize its family-entered care philosophy through completely redesigned inpatient facilities.

Blank Children’s Hospital has received a contract for Dr. Rizwan Shah’s research concerning meth-affected infants and children. Dr. Shah’s clinic follows children who have been affected by drug use during pregnancy. This research will specifically address the developmental issues caused by meth use during pregnancy, and compare it to other substance abuse. In September 2002, Dr. Shah opened the Regional Child Protection Center at Blank Children's Hospital. The Regional Child Protection Center located brings together a team of specialists who work together in the investigation, treatment and prosecution of child abuse cases in Central Iowa.
