Obesity FOCUS Group

One third of children in America are overweight. Expert recommendations for multidisciplinary and tertiary care have been developed to address pediatric obesity. However, there is variability in practice, lack of consensus and limited evidence on effectiveness.

In fall 2008, NACHRI launched the Obesity FOCUS Group with the tagline ”FOCUS on a Fitter Future", to examine and refine successful components of hospital-based clinical obesity programs such as:

  • Practice opportunities designed to strengthen programs
  • Enhancement of data collection and benchmarking
  • Assistance with program development

NACHRI selected 16 participating hospitals as a broad and inclusive representation of the NACHRI membership and varied sophistication levels of obesity programs.

Long-term Patient Care & Family Engagement

Through member surveying and literature search, this subgroup will compile a "state of the state" of children's hospitals treatment programs' success and length of patient/family engagement and followup in weight management programs. The white paper will be accompanied by a set of recommendations for family engagement.

Reimbursement

This subgroup's goal is to advocate for better reimbursement rates for multidisciplinary weight management teams by developing a reimbursement tool kit to potentially include:

  • a "gold standard"
  • PowerPoint presentations for providers to use to advocate with health plans and/or legislatures
  • a prior authorization template

This subgroup will develop a "survival guide" addressing how to make a strong case for creating and sustaining an obesity program. The group will also create a white paper focused on educationg hospital administrators on their role in supporting the hospital-based response to the childhood obesity epidemic.
