The Safety Store at Legacy Emanuel

The Safety Store, designed to resemble a typical home, offers hands-on practice and one-on-one education to protect curious children and to teach parents how to use and install safety devices—particularly window guards.

In 2009, The Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland, Oregon launched this safety store with an integrated Safe Escape Program. Once the store became operational, it hit the ground running with relevant education and products surrounding window falls.

Responding to an acute incidence of window falls—6 admissions in the first three weeks of May 2009-- the newly established store was able to provide the emergency department (ED) with literature on how to prevent window falls. Staff from the ED relied on the expertise of the safety store staff to provide timely and accurate information.

The store also became the only physical location in Oregon where parents and caregivers could not only see the window guard product, but receive instruction on how to properly measure and install it and to learn how to make a safe escape in the event of fire. This rapid response based on ED admission data brought media attention to a potentially fatal injury—window falls—and placed the injury prevention team at Legacy Emanuel as experts in the field.

The Safety Store is designed to resemble a typical home with a small fireplace, stairs, oven, windows, sinks, a tub, a crib, cabinets, and drawers.  It offers families the needed education to keep children safe and provides an access point for the hospital to leverage safety messages.
