In October 2006, as part of NACHRI’s commitment to transformational pediatric care, the Association created a national quality improvement collaborative to reduce and eventually eliminate Catheter-associated Blood Stream Infections (CA-BSI) in PICUs across the US. The CA-BSI project has resulted in a 70 percent decrease in CA-BSI events in the 27 institutions. Approximately 349 infections have been prevented, at a cost savings of approximately $12 million and an estimated 35-40 deaths have been prevented. Based on these results, a second phase of CA-BSI was launched in June 2008 with an additional 25 institutions. Results from both CA-BSI phases will be presented, as well as descriptions of methods used in the collaborative, the institutional support needed for participation and information about how interested institutions can become involved in the planned third phase of this initiative.
